Steal a Seed How to Steal Seeds: The Basic Theft Walkthrough
Learn the ordinary seed-theft flow in Steal a Seed: where seeds come from, the Speed and zone requirements, how to escape with a seed, and how to tell the theft actually worked.
Quick answer
In Steal a Seed, you steal seeds from gardens. A normal theft works like this: enter a garden zone whose recommended Speed you meet, pick up a seed (it appears in your character's hand), then carry it past the zone's guardian area so it can't be taken back. The theft is complete once you escape the zone with the seed and it joins your collection — if a zone guard catches you before that, the seed returns and you start over.
What counts as a completed seed theft
The game's own description places seed theft as the first step of the loop: "Steal seeds from gardens," then plant them to grow rare varieties, earn cash from your plants, and train and expand to boost Speed and unlock planters. The confirmed target of a theft attempt is a garden — including other players' gardens on the same server (servers hold up to 6 players). A theft is only finished when you escape the zone carrying the seed, not when you first pick it up.
Requirements before you attempt a steal
- Speed. Your Speed stat starts at zero and gates which garden zones you can enter. Zones show recommended Speed values — footage from one build showed a second section "recommended 900" and a third around 10k, with later zones climbing into the millions. Raise Speed by upgrading and training on the treadmill.
- Carrying weight (observed). Heavier seeds appear to slow you down while carried, based on player observation, which makes the escape harder than the grab itself. Treat this as a likelihood, not a confirmed rule, and expect the return trip to feel heavier with bigger seeds.
Note: no specific key or button binding for picking up a seed is documented here — check the in-game prompt when you approach a seed.
The ordinary theft attempt, step by step (as observed in gameplay)
- Move to a garden zone whose recommended Speed you meet.
- Approach a seed in the garden and pick it up — the seed is shown held in your character's hand.
- Carry it out of that zone. The zone's guardian can take the seed back if you're caught inside or near its area, so you need to "take it past his zone so he doesn't bring it back."
- Once you escape the zone with the seed, the theft is complete and the seed joins your collection.
One warning: while you're carrying a seed, other players can target you. Shop items exist that immobilize a player who is carrying a seed and touches them.
Success and failure states
Success: the seed visibly joins your collection. One player narrated it plainly after a grab: "Okay. Well, we stole that."
Failure has two observed forms:
- Knocked away before securing the seed — a guard knocks you back before you get a grip ("he knocks me away"). Just walk back and retry.
- Seed taken back at the edge of escape — one player had a seed snatched right as they were about to exit the zone, returning it to its garden. Recovery is simply returning and attempting the grab again, ideally targeting a smaller or further seed, or after raising your Speed.
These guard behaviors come from footage of one game build and may change — recheck against the current version.
After your first theft
Once you've completed a normal steal and confirmed the seed is in your collection, move on to planting it, or set a specific acquisition goal. Speed requirements climb sharply in later zones, and teaming up for high-tier seeds is a separate strategy — the basics above are everything an individual player needs for a standard grab.
